The Penguin Lessons

In The Penguin Lessons, we’re taken back to 1976 Argentina, a country on the brink of political upheaval. At the heart of the story is Tom Michell, a disillusioned British teacher who arrives at an elite boys’ school to teach English and coach rugby. Things aren’t exactly smooth sailing—his students are unruly, and he’s clearly carrying emotional baggage. But everything changes when he rescues a penguin during a trip to Uruguay. Yes, a real penguin.
This unlikely friendship becomes the emotional core of the film. The penguin, named Juan Salvador, isn’t just a cute sidekick—he becomes a catalyst for change. As Tom brings him back to the school, the bird unexpectedly helps him connect with his students and rediscover his compassion. Along the way, Tom also forms bonds with the school’s housekeeper Maria, her activist granddaughter Sofia, and a quirky science teacher named Tapio. But with the country descending into chaos, the story doesn’t shy away from the darker realities of the time.
Directed by Peter Cattaneo and starring Steve Coogan and Jonathan Pryce, The Penguin Lessons is a comedy-drama that blends heartwarming moments with a backdrop of political tension. It’s based on Tom Michell’s real-life memoir, which adds a layer of authenticity to the film’s more unbelievable moments—like smuggling a penguin across international borders.
If you’re into feel-good stories with a bit of historical context, this one’s for you. Animal lovers, especially those with a soft spot for penguins, will find plenty to smile about. Steve Coogan’s performance has been singled out as a highlight, and the film’s gentle humor and emotional beats make it a solid pick for fans of character-driven dramas.
That said, if you’re looking for a deep dive into Argentina’s political history, this film might not fully satisfy. Some critics have noted that it glosses over the more disturbing aspects of the era. And if you’re not into sentimental stories or animal-human bonding tales, this might not be your cup of tea.
Still, with a charming lead, a unique premise, and a penguin that steals the show, The Penguin Lessons offers a heartfelt escape with just enough bite to keep things interesting.
