The Bride!
The Bride! is a 2026 American gothic romance that takes you back to 1930s Chicago, where a lonely Frankenstein’s monster seeks out the brilliant Dr. Euphronious to create a companion. Together they bring a murdered woman back to life, and the resulting “Bride” sparks romance, police intrigue, and a wave of radical social change. The film is a modern remake of the 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein, itself inspired by Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel.
Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the movie boasts a star‑packed cast: Jessie Buckley plays the Bride (and also takes on the role of Mary Shelley), Christian Bale is the monster, Peter Sarsgaard is Detective Jake Wiles, Annette Bening portrays Dr. Euphronious, and Jake Gyllenhaal, Penélope Cruz, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, Jeannie Berlin, and others round out the ensemble. The film’s 126‑minute runtime is filled with big dance numbers, a lush IMAX‑certified visual style by cinematographer Lawrence Sher, and a haunting score by Hildur Guðnadóttir, with Fever Ray contributing two original songs and a cameo.
The production journey was a bit of a rollercoaster: Netflix originally announced the project in 2023, but Warner Bros. stepped in in 2024 after a disagreement over filming locations. The budget, which began at $80 million and later rose to $100 million, reflects the scale of the set pieces and the star power involved. Principal photography kicked off in New York City on March 4, 2024, and the film premiered at London’s Empire Leicester Square on February 26, 2026. It’s slated for a U.S. release by Warner Bros. Pictures, with an IMAX debut.
Who will love it? Fans of gothic romance, period dramas, and the Frankenstein mythos will find plenty to enjoy. The film’s blend of horror, romance, and social commentary, coupled with strong performances and striking visuals, makes it a treat for viewers who appreciate a modern take on classic horror. Those who prefer light‑hearted comedies or straightforward action might find the tone a bit heavy or the pacing slower, but the film’s unique blend of genres offers something fresh for anyone willing to dive into its dark, yet surprisingly melodic, world.
